The smartest person in the room, and the angriest.
Biography
Rocket is a laboratory animal who was cut apart, wired back together and given a mind big enough to understand exactly what was done to him. Everything else about the character grows out of that: the weapons obsession, the deflecting jokes, the refusal to let anyone call him a raccoon. He is a tactical genius, an engineer who can build a bomb out of a prosthetic leg, and the most emotionally guarded member of any team he joins.
He debuted in 1976 as a whimsical Bill Mantlo creation named after a Beatles song, patrolling an asylum planet called Halfworld where talking animals cared for the mentally ill. The 1985 miniseries with Mike Mignola on art leaned into the absurdity. The Annihilation era rebuilt him as the hard-edged strategist who talks Star-Lord out of stupid ideas and then executes a stupider one.
His bond with Groot is the reason the Guardians hold together, and his origin is the franchise's most brutal story. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 finally showed what the High Evolutionary did to 89P13 and the friends he was caged with, and turned Marvel's comedy raccoon into the emotional centre of a trilogy.

Bill Mantlo introduced Rocket in Marvel Preview #7 in 1976 as Rocky Raccoon, a whimsical alien guardian, before Keith Giffen's designs and the 1985 Rocket Raccoon miniseries drawn by Mike Mignola gave him the Halfworld mythology, complete with talking animal Keepers, a robot war and a toy company conspiracy.
Annihilation: Conquest recruited him into Star-Lord's strike team in 2007 and Abnett and Lanning made him second-in-command of the 2008 Guardians, where his deadpan brutality set the tone. He later led the Annihilators and headlined Skottie Young's 2014 solo series.
Modern comics have caught up to the films' emotional stakes, exploring the Halfworld experiments that made him and the cost of being an engineered creature with a genius intellect and no species to belong to.
