Biography
Gamora is the last of the Zen-Whoberi, a species wiped out by fanatics of the Universal Church of Truth. Thanos took the surviving child, rebuilt her with cybernetic augmentation and trained her for one purpose: to kill the Magus. She grew into the most accomplished assassin in the galaxy, marketed in her own debut as the deadliest woman alive, and spent her life discovering that being raised as a weapon is not the same as being one.
Her real story is the escape. She turned on Thanos, allied with Adam Warlock, carried the Time Gem on the Infinity Watch and eventually helped found the Guardians of the Galaxy, where she found the first group of people who did not want anything from her. The comics have repeatedly tested how much of Thanos' conditioning still runs underneath, most brutally in Infinity Wars where she became Requiem and turned on nearly everyone.
The MCU compressed all of it into two films and then blew it up. Zoe Saldana's Gamora died on Vormir so Thanos could buy the Soul Stone, and Endgame replaced her with a 2014 variant who never met the man she loved. Vol. 3 refused to soften it: this Gamora is a Ravager with no memory of Peter Quill, and the film makes her right to walk away.

Comics history
Jim Starlin created her in Strange Tales #180 in 1975 as part of the Adam Warlock and Magus saga, immediately branding her the deadliest woman in the whole galaxy. She died in that era and was preserved in the Soul Gem, one of many characters Starlin cycled through death and cosmic rebirth.
The Infinity Gauntlet in 1991 and Warlock and the Infinity Watch that followed restored her properly, giving her the Time Gem and a place on Warlock's team. Her modern identity dates from Abnett and Lanning's 2008 Guardians of the Galaxy, where she became the team's blade and its most disciplined member.
Infinity Wars in 2018 gave her the darkest chapter of the character, turning her into Requiem, a Soul-Stone-wielding killer moving against the entire hero community. Marvel has since walked her back toward the Guardians, but the run confirmed that the assassin Thanos built is still in there.

Is Gamora really Thanos' daughter?
Adopted, and in the harshest possible sense. In the comics Thanos took her after the Universal Church of Truth wiped out the Zen-Whoberi and raised her as a weapon against the Magus. The MCU makes Thanos himself responsible for her people's deaths, which sharpens the betrayal.
Is the Gamora in Vol. 3 the same one who died?
No. The original died on Vormir in Avengers: Infinity War when Thanos sacrificed her for the Soul Stone. The Gamora in Endgame and Vol. 3 is a 2014 variant pulled forward in time, with no memory of Peter Quill or their relationship.
How strong is Gamora?
She is enhanced rather than cosmic, with augmented strength, speed, healing and a reinforced skeleton on top of the best combat training in the galaxy. Against a cosmic entity she loses; against almost anyone else, she is the most dangerous person present.
