Biography
Arthur Douglas was a real-estate agent driving through the Mojave with his wife and daughter when Thanos destroyed their car to cover his tracks. Kronos, the cosmic entity who is also Thanos' great-grandfather, took Arthur's soul, poured it into a purpose-built body and named the result Drax the Destroyer. Drax is not a warrior who wants revenge. He is revenge, given a body.
That single-mindedness has cost him almost everything, including most of his memories of the life he lost, and his daughter Heather grew up to become the telepath Moondragon. Keith Giffen's 2005 reinvention stripped away the bulky purple-and-green look for a leaner, knife-carrying killer, and it paid off immediately: Drax reached into Thanos' chest during Annihilation and tore out his heart. Mission complete, more or less.

Comics history
Jim Starlin created him in Iron Man #55 in 1974, in the same issue that introduced Thanos, Mentor and Kronos, tying the whole Titan mythology together in one go. Early Drax was a green-skinned cosmic brawler with a rambling messianic streak; the Infinity Gauntlet era knocked his intellect down to child level and put him on the Infinity Watch holding the Power Gem.
Keith Giffen's Drax the Destroyer miniseries in 2005 rebuilt him as a lean, quiet, knife-wielding killer, and the payoff came in Annihilation #4 when he killed Thanos by hand. He joined the 2008 Guardians of the Galaxy and has been a fixture of Marvel's cosmic line since, generally as the crew's most literal-minded and least controllable member.

Why was Drax created?
The cosmic entity Kronos needed a weapon against Thanos, so he took the soul of Arthur Douglas, a man Thanos had murdered, and built it a body engineered for that single purpose. Drax's compulsion to hunt Thanos is not a choice, it is his design specification.
Did Drax actually kill Thanos?
Yes. In Annihilation #4 in 2006 Drax reached into Thanos' chest and tore out his heart. Thanos, being Thanos, came back, but the kill counts and Drax has never let anyone forget it.
Why is Drax so literal in the films?
James Gunn leaned into a comics trait, since post-Infinity-Watch Drax was written with severely reduced intellect and no grasp of metaphor. The MCU turned it into comedy by giving his species a stated inability to process figurative language.
