Biography
Thor is Marvel's oldest character in the most literal sense: Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, and Jack Kirby lifted him wholesale from Norse myth, then invented an entire cosmology around him. Journey into Mystery #83 gave him a human alter ego in the disabled physician Donald Blake, a walking stick that became Mjolnir, and an enchantment that made the hammer liftable only by the worthy. That last detail turned out to be the best story engine in comics.
He is a top-tier powerhouse: strength in the class of the Hulk, flight by hammer throw, total mastery of storm and lightning, and the Warrior's Madness as a berserk overdrive. But the Thor titles have always been about family and duty, an arrogant heir being repeatedly humbled by Odin, betrayed by Loki, and forced to earn a crown he does not want. The Norse concept of a foretold, unavoidable Ragnarok gives the book something almost no superhero has: a scheduled ending.
Walter Simonson's 1980s run and Jason Aaron's decade-long 2010s run are the twin peaks. Simonson gave Mjolnir to the alien Beta Ray Bill on page one of his tenure, then wrote the Surtur Saga. Aaron introduced Gorr the God Butcher, made Thor unworthy with a single whispered sentence from Nick Fury, and handed the hammer to a cancer-stricken Jane Foster, whose run as the Mighty Thor is now the definitive modern take on the mantle.

Comics history
Kirby's 1960s Journey into Mystery, especially the Tales of Asgard back-ups, built the mythology that every later run draws on. Walter Simonson's 1983-1987 tenure is still cited as the gold standard: Beta Ray Bill lifting Mjolnir, the Surtur Saga, Thor turned into a frog, and Skurge's last stand at the bridge of Gjallerbru.
Michael Avon Oeming and Andrea Di Vito's Ragnarok in 2004 destroyed Asgard entirely and shelved the character, until J. Michael Straczynski and Olivier Coipel restored him in 2007 and rebuilt Asgard above Broxton, Oklahoma. That relocation set up Siege in 2010, when Norman Osborn invaded and Thor killed his own grandfather, the Void-empowered Sentry.
Jason Aaron then wrote Thor for roughly a decade. Thor: God of Thunder gave us The God Butcher and Godbomb with Esad Ribic, then Original Sin left Thor unworthy, Jane Foster took the hammer through Mighty Thor and The Death of the Mighty Thor, and War of the Realms in 2019 paid off years of build with Malekith's assault on all Ten Realms.

Anyone the enchantment judges worthy. Confirmed lifters include Captain America, Beta Ray Bill, Jane Foster, Storm, Wonder Man, Black Widow in an alternate future, and Superman in the DC crossover. Worthiness is about self-sacrifice, not moral perfection, which is why Thor himself has lost it.
Is Thor stronger than the Hulk?
They are deliberately kept level. Marvel's power grid rates both at maximum strength, and the fights end in draws or interruptions. Thor has the edge in versatility with weather, flight, and energy; the Hulk has the edge in endurance because his strength climbs with his anger.
What is Stormbreaker?
In the comics, Stormbreaker is Beta Ray Bill's hammer, forged by Eitri as an equal to Mjolnir after Bill proved worthy. The MCU reassigned the name and design to the axe Thor forges on Nidavellir in Infinity War, which can summon the Bifrost.
Has Thor ever died?
Repeatedly. He falls in Ragnarok in 2004, dies during the original Fear Itself fallout, and is killed and resurrected across Aaron's run. Asgardian death is cyclical by design, Ragnarok is a rebirth mechanism as much as an ending.
