Biography
Norrin Radd was an astronomer on a paradise planet with nothing left to strive for when Galactus arrived to eat it. He offered himself as a herald in exchange for Zenn-La's survival, and Galactus remade him into silver and set him loose to find inhabited worlds. The Surfer spent years leading the devourer to other people's homes, because that was the deal.
Then he reached Earth. Fantastic Four #48 to #50 is the story of a slave finding his conscience: the Surfer turned on his master, helped the Fantastic Four drive Galactus off, and was punished with an energy barrier that trapped him on a planet he barely understood. Those exile years, written mostly by Stan Lee and drawn by John Buscema, made him Marvel's philosopher, a Christ-figure on a surfboard raging about humanity's cruelty.
Free of the barrier since 1987, he has become the universe's conscience with unlimited mileage. He warned Earth about the Infinity Gauntlet, fought through Annihilation, briefly took the herald's job back on his own terms, and travelled with Dawn Greenwood on the closest thing to a cosmic road trip Marvel has published. Nobody in Marvel commands the Power Cosmic with more finesse.

Comics history
Kirby created the Surfer without telling Stan Lee, dropping a silver figure on a flying board into the Galactus story simply because a being like Galactus should have a herald. Lee fell for him immediately and kept the character for himself, writing the 1968 Silver Surfer series with John Buscema as a deliberately literary book, all anguish and moral argument, unlike anything else Marvel published.
Steve Englehart and Marshall Rogers relaunched him in 1987 by finally shattering the barrier keeping him on Earth, and the character became the backbone of Marvel's cosmic line. He is the one who tells Earth what is coming, whether that is Thanos assembling the Infinity Gauntlet or the Annihilation Wave tearing through the Nova Corps.
Modern high points include Silver Surfer: Requiem in 2007 and the Dan Slott and Michael Allred run from 2014, a Doctor Who-flavoured series that paired him with human traveller Dawn Greenwood and let the Sentinel of the Spaceways be joyful for once.
