Mister Fantastic
Reed Richards
The smartest man in the room, and the one who bends the furthest.
Biography
Reed Richards built the rocket, flew it without clearance, and gave the Marvel Universe its first family. The cosmic rays that hit that ship in Fantastic Four #1 rewrote four bodies at once, and Reed got the strangest gift of the four: a form with no fixed shape. He stretches, flattens, coils and reshapes himself into whatever the problem in front of him requires. It is the perfect power for a man whose actual superpower is being right.
He is the most consequential scientist on Earth and one of the most infuriating men in it. Reed solves for the universe first and the dinner table second, and the Fantastic Four's best stories are the ones where that arithmetic costs him. He mapped the Negative Zone, put Galactus on trial, argued the Illuminati into secretly running the world, and backed superhuman registration while his oldest friend went underground over it.
Strip away the elastic limbs and Reed is still the most dangerous person in any room, because he has already run the simulation. He talked the devourer of worlds out of eating Earth. He rebuilt the entire multiverse from scratch after everything ended. When Marvel needs someone to explain why reality is broken and then fix it before the last page, they call the man in the blue suit with the grey temples.

Comics history
Fantastic Four #1 in November 1961 is the issue that starts modern Marvel, and Reed is its spine. Lee and Kirby ran a 102-issue collaboration on the title that produced the Negative Zone, the Inhumans, the Black Panther and the Galactus Trilogy, all filtered through Reed's laboratory. His marriage to Sue in Fantastic Four Annual #3 in 1965 drew what still counts as the biggest guest list in comics.
The 1980s handed Reed his defining moral test in Fantastic Four #262, where he stood trial before the cosmic community for saving Galactus and argued that the devourer is a necessary function of the universe rather than a murderer. Civil War in 2006 pushed him the other way, putting him on the pro-registration side against Ben and Johnny's instincts, and Jonathan Hickman's long run reframed him as the head of the Future Foundation, a school built to solve everything.
Hickman finished the thought with Secret Wars in 2015. With the multiverse dead and Doctor Doom sitting as god of Battleworld, Reed won by out-thinking him, then spent the aftermath off-panel with Sue and the kids literally rebuilding creation. Marvel brought the family home with a new Fantastic Four #1 in 2018.

- The unstable molecules that let the team's uniforms stretch, burn and vanish on command are Reed's invention, and Marvel has quietly used them to explain costume physics for sixty years.
- He is the only person to successfully defend Galactus in open court, in Fantastic Four #262.
- Reed served on the Illuminati alongside Namor, Professor X, Doctor Strange, Iron Man and Black Bolt, a secret council that decided to fire Hulk into space.
- His father Nathaniel Richards is a time traveller, which makes the Richards family tree overlap uncomfortably with Kang's.
- At the end of Secret Wars in 2015 he and Sue restored the Marvel multiverse, making him briefly the most powerful being in publication.
- John Krasinski was fan-cast as Reed for years before Marvel actually put him on screen in 2022, and killed him in the same scene.
