Character profile
Mantis
Mantis
An empath raised by Kree priests to become the mother of a cosmic messiah.
Biography
Mantis is one of the strangest characters Marvel has ever kept in continuous circulation. The daughter of a German ex-mercenary and a Vietnamese woman, she was handed as an infant to the Kree Priests of Pama, who raised her in a temple, trained her to a level of martial perfection few humans reach, and quietly prepared her to become the Celestial Madonna, destined to bear the most important child in the universe.
Steve Englehart's Celestial Madonna saga in the mid-1970s paid that off with one of the most peculiar weddings in comics, marrying her to the plant-based Cotati consciousness inhabiting the Swordsman's body. She has been an Avenger, a founding member of the 2008 Guardians of the Galaxy, and in the MCU a gentle empath raised by Ego, whose ability to sense and adjust emotion is the reason the crew survives Thanos on Titan at all.

Comics history
Englehart introduced her in Avengers #112 in 1973 as a mystery: a martial artist referring to herself in the third person who moved through the Avengers' orbit with an agenda nobody understood. The Celestial Madonna storyline across Avengers #123 to #135 and Giant-Size Avengers #4 in 1974 and 1975 revealed the Priests of Pama, her Cotati destiny and the marriage that closed the arc.
She spent decades as a cosmic wanderer before Abnett and Lanning drafted her into the 2008 Guardians of the Galaxy, where her empathy made her the team's recruiter and conscience. The Empyre event in 2020 brought her Cotati history roaring back into Marvel's main line.
