Biography
Nebula arrived in 1985 as a space pirate claiming to be Thanos' granddaughter, a claim Thanos has publicly denied and privately never bothered to clarify. She seized Sanctuary II, fought the Avengers, and then made history: during The Infinity Gauntlet she took the completed Gauntlet off Thanos while he was distracted, becoming, for a few pages, the most powerful being in the universe.
Her modern arc is the best redemption story in Marvel's cosmic line, and the MCU version is the definitive telling. Karen Gillan's Nebula begins as Thanos' most damaged instrument, a daughter rebuilt with machinery every time she lost to Gamora, and ends as the person who rebuilds Knowhere into somewhere children can live. The rage never disappears. She just aims it somewhere useful.

Comics history
Roger Stern and John Buscema created her for a 1985 Avengers arc as a ruthless pirate captain with a claimed link to Thanos. Jim Starlin then gave her the single most important beat of her comics career: in The Infinity Gauntlet she snatched the Gauntlet from Thanos and undid his victory, before Adam Warlock talked it away from her.
Thanos punished her by reducing her to a barely living husk, an image that defined her look for years, and she has cycled between villainy and grudging cooperation ever since. The films' redemption arc has fed back into the comics, where she now appears on Guardians rosters.
