Biography
Shang-Chi was raised in a sealed compound in Hunan, trained from infancy in every discipline of Chinese martial arts, and told his father was a great humanitarian. He was sent out at nineteen to assassinate a man his father called a monster, discovered the target was telling the truth, and turned on his own family. Everything he has done since has been an attempt to be worth more than the weapon he was built to be.
He is the best unarmed fighter in the Marvel Universe, and Marvel treats that as a hard fact rather than a matter of opinion. He is rated at the maximum on the fighting-skill grid, which puts him above Captain America, Iron Fist, and Black Panther. His chi control lets him deflect bullets, shatter steel, and fight opponents whose strength dwarfs his own by simply not being where the punch lands. Given a weapon, he is a master of it in minutes.
His father was originally Fu Manchu, licensed from the Sax Rohmer estate for the 1970s series and written out when the rights lapsed. Marvel eventually rebuilt the character as Zheng Zu, an immortal sorcerer and founder of the Five Weapons Society, and Gene Luen Yang's 2020 run turned the whole legacy inside out by making Shang-Chi the Society's reluctant Supreme Commander. That is the arc the 2021 film adapted, with Tony Leung's Xu Wenwu as the definitive screen version of the father.

Comics history
Special Marvel Edition #15 launched him at the height of the kung fu film boom, and the title was renamed Master of Kung Fu two issues later. Doug Moench and Paul Gulacy's long run on that book is one of the most stylish comics of the 1970s, blending martial arts with espionage and giving him allies like Black Jack Tarr, Clive Reston, and Leiko Wu.
After Master of Kung Fu ended in 1983 Shang-Chi drifted between guest appearances, Heroes for Hire, and Marvel Knights. Ed Brubaker and Mike Deodato used him in Secret Avengers, Jonathan Hickman put him on the Avengers roster, and Matt Fraction's Iron Fist work paired him with the immortal weapons.
Gene Luen Yang and Dike Ruan's Shang-Chi (2020) is the modern reinvention. It introduced his siblings Zheng Shi-Hua, who fights as Sister Hammer, and Zheng Takeshi, established Zheng Zu as the founder of the Five Weapons Society, and made Shang-Chi its Supreme Commander, forcing him to lead the organisation he spent his life trying to destroy.
