Black Panther

T'Challa is the first Black superhero in mainstream American comics, arriving in Fantastic Four #52 in July 1966, months before the founding of the Black Panther Party. Stan Lee and Jack Kirby introduced him not as a sidekick or a curiosity but as a head of state who lures the Fantastic Four to his country and beats all four of them in single combat as a test. That entrance still defines him.

He holds three offices at once: King of Wakanda, chieftain of the Panther Cult, and the world's most technologically advanced nation's chief strategist. The Heart-Shaped Herb grants him enhanced strength, senses, and reflexes; the vibranium habit does the rest. Wakanda's monopoly on the metal makes him a geopolitical power in his own right, and Marvel has consistently written him as a leader whose first loyalty is to a country rather than a team.

That makes him the most interesting Avenger to argue with. He joined the Illuminati and then quietly refused to hand over his vibranium. He kept a contingency file on every hero he knew. Christopher Priest's run had him treat Avengers membership as an intelligence-gathering assignment. Ta-Nehisi Coates then spent five years asking whether a hereditary monarchy can be moral at all, ending T'Challa's absolute rule and pushing Wakanda toward elected government.

After his Fantastic Four debut and a long Avengers tenure, T'Challa got his first sustained solo work in Jungle Action #6-18 (1973-1975). Don McGregor's Panther's Rage is a thirteen-issue novel-length epic in which Killmonger nearly takes Wakanda apart, and it is widely regarded as the first graphic novel Marvel published in serial form.

Christopher Priest and Mark Texeira's 1998 Black Panther relaunched him as a cold, calculating statesman narrated by a bewildered State Department liaison, and introduced the Dora Milaje. Reginald Hudlin's mid-2000s run married him to Storm, and Jonathan Hickman's Fantastic Four and Avengers work put him at the centre of the Illuminati's Incursion crisis, where he refused to build a world-killing weapon.

Ta-Nehisi Coates wrote him from 2016 to 2021. A Nation Under Our Feet dealt with rebellion and grief after Wakanda's near-destruction, and The Intergalactic Empire of Wakanda revealed a millennia-old Wakandan star empire built on conquest, forcing T'Challa to confront his own nation's imperial capacity. Doomwar (2010) had Doctor Doom steal Wakanda's entire vibranium supply, and T'Challa destroy it rather than let him keep it.
