Biography
Ororo Munroe has been three people and never stopped being any of them. The child of an American photojournalist and a Kenyan princess, she was buried alive in the rubble of a Cairo building that killed both her parents — an event that left her with claustrophobia so severe it has cost her fights, and with nobody to raise her. She survived as a street thief under the Shadow King, walked south into the Serengeti as a teenager, and was worshipped as a rain goddess by villages who had watched a white-haired girl end their drought. All three lives are still visible in how she carries herself.
Xavier recruited her in Giant-Size X-Men #1, and she became the emotional spine of the most successful superhero team relaunch ever published. When Cyclops stepped back, she took command — then won a Danger Room duel to keep it. That era gave us the mohawk, the leather, and a woman with no powers at all beating Callisto in a knife fight for leadership of the Morlocks, because she understood that authority is something you take responsibility for rather than something you are given. Forge's neutraliser stripped her weather control for nearly two publication years, and she led anyway.
She has been queen of Wakanda beside T'Challa, a member of the Fantastic Four and the Avengers, and Krakoa's Regent of Sol — mutantkind's voice for an entire solar system. As Marvel's first major Black woman superhero and the first to lead a flagship team, she carries a weight no power grid measures. The lightning is the least interesting thing about her; what makes Storm formidable is that she has been powerless, homeless and deified, and none of it moved her off her own centre.

Comics history
Storm arrived fully formed in Giant-Size X-Men #1 (1975), Len Wein and Dave Cockrum's international team-building exercise, and immediately became the character other writers wanted to use. Chris Claremont spent seventeen years on her: the goddess complex, the theft of her powers, the Morlock tunnels, the friendship with Kitty Pryde that reads like adoption, and the 1980s reinvention where Yukio's influence produced the mohawk and the leather and one of the sharpest visual pivots in the medium. Claremont also made her leader, then made her earn it in a duel against Cyclops rather than inherit it.
Later decades kept widening her footprint. She anchored X-Treme X-Men, married T'Challa in 2006 and spent years as Wakanda's queen — a marriage annulled during the fallout of Avengers vs. X-Men — did a stint with the Fantastic Four, joined the Avengers, and headmistressed the Jean Grey School. The Krakoa era gave her the biggest title of her career as Regent of Sol, and From the Ashes (2024) put her back at the front of the franchise, where Marvel has spent fifty years discovering she works best.

Is Storm an omega-level mutant?
Yes. Marvel formally classified her omega-level during the Krakoa era, on the grounds that her control of weather has no meaningful upper limit within a planetary atmosphere. She has manipulated climate on other worlds and calmed or created continent-scale systems, which puts her in the same conversation as Jean Grey and Magneto rather than a tier below them.
Why is Storm claustrophobic?
A bombed building collapsed on her family home in Cairo when she was a small child, killing both her parents and trapping her in the rubble beside her mother's body. The phobia has never been written away, and enemies who know about it have used enclosed spaces to shut her down. It is the single most consistent vulnerability in her fifty-year publication history.
Are Storm and Black Panther still married?
No. They married in 2006 and she reigned as queen of Wakanda, but the marriage was annulled in the wake of Avengers vs. X-Men when T'Challa could not forgive the X-Men's role in Wakanda's devastation. The two remain on complicated, occasionally romantic terms, and Marvel revisits the relationship regularly without restoring it.
Has Storm ever led the X-Men?
