Biography
Betsy Braddock started out as Brian Braddock's twin sister in a British weekly: a charter pilot and fashion model with precognitive flashes, orbiting her brother's Captain Britain career. She took the costume herself when he could not wear it, and Slaymaster beat her nearly to death and blinded her for the trouble; Mojo replaced her eyes with cameras. That is who joined the X-Men. Betsy's real gift turned out to be telepathy sharpened into a weapon: the psychic knife, which she announces with the best catchphrase in mutant history, and psi-constructs she swings like tempered steel.
Then came the complication that defined thirty years of her publishing history. The Siege Perilous dumped her in Asia, where the Hand and Spiral rebuilt her as Lady Mandarin and entangled her with the ninja assassin Kwannon. Betsy spent the next three decades in Kwannon's body, while Kwannon briefly surfaced as Revanche before dying of the Legacy Virus. Marvel separated them in 2018: Betsy returned to her original body, and Kwannon came back to claim Psylocke as her own name. Betsy took the Captain Britain mantle instead, leading Excalibur and the Knights of X through Otherworld.

Comics history
No X-Man has a messier publication history, and none has been handled more carefully lately. Claremont and Herb Trimpe created Betsy for the British Captain Britain strip; Claremont later imported her, and the Siege Perilous plus Jim Lee's Uncanny X-Men run rebuilt her as Lady Mandarin, the version that fronted the 1990s. Rick Remender's Uncanny X-Force gave her the best writing of her life. Then, in 2018, Marvel restored Betsy's original body and handed Kwannon her own identity back, and Tini Howard's Excalibur and Knights of X made Betsy the Captain Britain of her own book.

Why did Psylocke's body change?
After passing through the Siege Perilous, Betsy washed up in Asia, where the Hand and the reality-warping Spiral rebuilt and brainwashed her as Lady Mandarin, entangling her physically with the assassin Kwannon.
