Biography
The Phoenix Force is the cosmic embodiment of life and passion, an entity that came into existence with the first living thing and will outlast the last. It is not a mutant power and it does not belong to Jean Grey, though their bond is the most famous relationship in X-Men history. It needs a host to experience emotion, and it chooses hosts whose capacity for feeling matches its own.
That arrangement is catastrophic roughly half the time. As the Dark Phoenix it consumed a star and the billions of lives around it, an act that ended with Jean's death on the Moon in one of the most influential stories comics has produced. The Force has since ridden Rachel Summers, Hope Summers, Quentin Quire, Maya Lopez and, in Avengers vs. X-Men, five X-Men simultaneously, which nearly rewrote the world.

Comics history
It debuted in X-Men #101 in 1976 when Jean Grey emerged from a space shuttle crash as Phoenix, and Claremont spent years building it from a power upgrade into a cosmic entity. The Dark Phoenix Saga in 1980 remains the definitive story, ending with Jean's suicide on the Moon rather than risk another genocide.
Marvel later separated Jean from the Force, revealing her true body in a cocoon in 1986 and clearing the way for decades of hosts. Avengers vs. X-Men in 2012 split it among five X-Men, and Jason Aaron's Avengers ran a tournament for the job that ended with Maya Lopez as host.
