Biography
The Living Tribunal is the highest authority in the Marvel multiverse below the One-Above-All. It exists to maintain balance across every reality simultaneously, and it does not intervene in local matters, wars or tragedies. It intervenes when the structure itself is threatened. Its three faces, representing equity, necessity and vengeance, must reach agreement before it acts, and its rulings bind Eternity, the Celestials and Galactus alike.
It is the entity Marvel deploys to establish that a threat has outgrown the universe. The Tribunal declared that the Infinity Gems may never again be assembled into a functioning Gauntlet, a ruling that shaped decades of cosmic storytelling. When Jonathan Hickman needed to signal that the entire multiverse was dying, he did not stage a battle. He showed the Tribunal dead, and every reader understood immediately.

Comics history
Stan Lee and Marie Severin introduced it in Strange Tales #157 in 1967, and it has functioned ever since as Marvel's constitutional backstop, appearing whenever a story needs a ruling rather than a fight. Doctor Strange, the Silver Surfer, Adam Warlock and Thanos have all argued cases before it.
Its most consequential appearance is around The Infinity Gauntlet and Infinity War, where it barred the reassembly of the Gems into a working Gauntlet, a ruling that governed Marvel's cosmic line for years. Hickman's Avengers and New Avengers run in the 2010s revealed the Tribunal dead, killed as part of the Beyonders' assault on the multiverse, which set up the incursions that led to Secret Wars in 2015.
