Biography
Kurt Wagner was abandoned as an infant because of a face that looked like an accusation. Margali Szardos raised him in a Bavarian travelling circus, where a blue-furred acrobat with a tail was simply the best act on the bill. He came to the X-Men in the all-new, all-different relaunch and immediately became their heart: a swashbuckler with Errol Flynn's grin, a devout Catholic who prayed before missions, and the teammate who cracked a joke while teleporting into a Sentinel's blind spot. Nobody in that mansion carried more grief with less self-pity.
His family tree is a horror story. Mystique is his mother, and she dropped him off a cliff to save herself; the demonic Azazel turned out to be his father. Kurt built a better life anyway. He co-founded Excalibur in Britain with Kitty Pryde and Lockheed, took a killing blow from Bastion to get Hope Summers clear during Second Coming, and came back from the dead in Amazing X-Men with his soul intact. On Krakoa he did the one thing nobody else thought to do: he asked what a nation of resurrected mutants should actually believe in, and founded a faith around the Spark.

Comics history
Nightcrawler is the character who proves Giant-Size X-Men #1 worked. Cockrum designed him, Claremont gave him the voice, and by the early 1980s he was the book's moral ballast and its best action sequence at the same time. Claremont and Alan Davis spun him off into Excalibur, which ran a decade largely on his charm. Chuck Austen's 2000s run handed him a priesthood and a demon father, both of which later writers had to negotiate with. He died in Second Coming, and Jason Aaron's Amazing X-Men brought him back out of the afterlife itself. Si Spurrier's Way of X and Legion of X then made him Krakoa's theologian.

- Dave Cockrum designed him years before Giant-Size X-Men, for a project that never happened; the drawing sat in a drawer until Marvel needed a new international team.
- A 2000s storyline ordained him as a Catholic priest, and a later run revealed the ordination was a fraud staged by the Church of Humanity.
- His teleport sound effect, BAMF, became such a fixture that Kitty Pryde named a stuffed toy after it and Marvel later turned the bamfs into actual creatures.
