Biography
Remy LeBeau learned his trade lifting wallets in the French Quarter before the New Orleans Thieves Guild adopted him and rented him out to a collector called the Antiquary, who kept mutants the way other men keep art. His mutation converts the stored potential energy in an object into raw kinetic energy on contact, which is an elegant way of saying that anything in his hand becomes a bomb. He picked playing cards because they fly straight and because presentation matters. When the Guilds tried to buy peace with the Assassins by marrying him to Bella Donna Boudreaux, the wedding ended in blood.
The worst thing he ever did happened before the X-Men had heard his name. A man calling himself Mister Sinister cleared Remy's debts and collected on the favour: Gambit recruited and assembled the killers who became the Marauders, then walked away once he understood what they had been pointed at. He did not stop the Mutant Massacre in the Morlock tunnels. He carried that secret into the mansion, into Rogue's arms, and when it finally came out the X-Men held a trial in Antarctica and left him standing in the snow. Nobody on the hero side of the roster has a colder skeleton in the closet.
What keeps him compelling is that he is genuinely excellent at being a bad influence. Gambit is a superb close-quarters fighter with a telescoping bo staff, a career thief with a conscience he keeps misplacing, and the only X-Man who treats a mission briefing as an opening bid. Apocalypse remade him as Death and he clawed his way back. Storm took him worldwide in X-Treme X-Men. He married Rogue in front of the whole school. Fox spent most of a decade failing to get his solo film made, which is somehow the most Gambit outcome available.

Comics history
Gambit arrived fully formed in Uncanny X-Men #266 (August 1990), rescuing a Storm who had been de-aged into a child thief, and he was designed to be exactly what the franchise lacked: a hero the reader could not vouch for. Chris Claremont and Jim Lee gave him a trench coat, an accent, an unspecified debt and an obvious interest in the one teammate he could not touch, then let the ambiguity do the work. Within a year he was a cornerstone of the 1991 X-Men relaunch and one of the biggest breakout characters of the decade, powered further by X-Men: The Animated Series making him a household name.
The pay-off came slowly and hurt. The Marauders revelation and the Trial of Gambit (1997) turned nine years of hints into an abandonment in Antarctica, and the fallout drove his first solo ongoing series in 1999. He was drafted as one of Apocalypse's Horsemen in the mid-2000s, ran with Storm's X-Treme X-Men, headlined a run of solo relaunches, and finally married Rogue in X-Men Gold in 2018. On screen the story is thinner: an early Fox appearance in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, years of a Channing Tatum solo film that never shot, and at last an MCU bow in Deadpool & Wolverine.

Mister Sinister hired him to recruit and organise the Marauders, and Remy walked away only once he realised they were being sent to slaughter the Morlocks in the tunnels beneath New York. He did not warn anyone, and the X-Men put him on trial for it in Antarctica years later.

Why did Rogue and Gambit take so long to get together?
Their whole relationship was built on a cruel mechanic: Rogue's absorption meant any real contact would put Remy in a coma and dump his secrets into her head. When she did absorb him, the truth about the Marauders came out and blew the relationship apart. It took until 2018, and Rogue mastering her power, for the two of them to marry.
Is there a Gambit movie?
Not a solo one. Fox developed a Gambit film with Channing Tatum attached for years, burning through directors and release dates until the Disney acquisition shut it down. Tatum finally played the character in Deadpool & Wolverine in 2024, which is as close as the project ever got.
