Biography
Maya Lopez is deaf, Cheyenne, and the most dangerous student any fighter never meant to take on. Her photographic reflexes let her reproduce any physical movement she has seen once, perfectly, which is how a girl who was labelled slow as a child became a concert pianist by watching hands on a keyboard and a world-class combatant by watching Daredevil work a rooftop. The white handprint she paints across her face is not a costume choice. It is the mark her father left on her cheek as he bled out.
The cruelty of her origin is that Wilson Fisk ordered that killing, then raised her himself and pointed her at Daredevil as the murderer. Maya fell for it, fought Matt Murdock, fell for him too, and then worked out the truth and put a bullet in Fisk's face. Everything since has been her deciding what she is when nobody else is aiming her: the first Ronin, an Avenger, a woman who walked into a tournament for the Phoenix Force and walked out carrying it.

Comics history
David Mack and Joe Quesada introduced Maya in Daredevil #9 in 1999, opening the Parts of a Hole arc that ran into 2000. Wilson Fisk, who had her father Willie Lincoln killed, raised her as his ward and eventually aimed her at Daredevil with a lie. She dated Matt Murdock without knowing who he was, fought him without knowing why, and when the truth landed she shot Fisk in the face at point-blank range.
Mack brought her back for the Vision Quest arc in Daredevil in 2003, a painted, experimental storyline about Maya leaving New York to work out who she is on her own terms rather than as someone else's weapon. It remains the definitive Echo story and one of the most formally adventurous things Marvel published that decade.
Brian Michael Bendis put her under a new mask in New Avengers in 2005: Ronin, the masked swordsman fighting the Hand in Japan, revealed to be Maya. The identity later passed to Clint Barton, but she wore it first. Her Japan run cost her badly, including a stretch in which the Hand killed her and turned her into their own weapon before her teammates pulled her back.
Jason Aaron's Avengers threw a tournament for the Phoenix Force in 2021 and Maya won it, beating a field of gods and heavyweights to become the host. Rebecca Roanhorse and Luca Maresca followed it with the Phoenix Song: Echo miniseries, tying the Force's fire to her Cheyenne heritage rather than to the usual X-Men mythology.
