WandaVision Ending Explained: The Hex, White Vision And How Wanda Became The Scarlet Witch

Short answer: Wanda chooses to dismantle the Hex, which means erasing Vision and their two sons, because keeping Westview trapped is not a price she is willing to make other people pay. Before she does, she defeats Agatha Harkness by having pre-drawn runes into the Hex's walls, which strip Agatha's magic and leave her locked in the Agnes persona. The two Visions resolve their conflict with a philosophy argument rather than a fight, and White Vision flies away with his memories restored. Wanda walks out of Westview alone, having been named the Scarlet Witch, a title the Darkhold says belongs to a being more powerful than the Sorcerer Supreme.

What actually happened

1. WandaVision's premise is revealed across episodes seven and eight: Wanda's grief over Vision's death, plus S.W.O.R.D. refusing to release his body, caused an uncontrolled outpouring of chaos magic that rebuilt him and enslaved a town.
2. Agatha Harkness has been inside the sitcom since episode one as Agnes, studying Wanda to work out what she is. Agatha wants the power, not the town.
3. Tyler Hayward reassembles Vision's actual body as a colourless weapon, White Vision, and sends him in to destroy the Hex Vision.
4. The two Visions meet and neither fights. They resolve the Ship of Theseus problem out loud, and Hex Vision restores the memories S.W.O.R.D. wiped, which makes White Vision leave rather than kill.
5. Wanda appears to surrender to Agatha, then reveals the runes she carved into the Hex's boundary, which mean no magic but the caster's works inside them.
6. Wanda absorbs Agatha's power, takes the Scarlet Witch form and crown, and leaves Agatha trapped in the Agnes personality as a permanent prisoner.
7. Wanda dissolves the Hex, saying goodbye to Vision and the twins as they fade, and leaves Westview to a town that hates her.

The scene people remember is Vision's line about grief being love persevering, and it lands because the show has spent nine episodes withholding any acknowledgement that Wanda knows what she has done. She knows. She has always known. That is why the sitcom formats kept escalating.

The finale's cruelty is precise: Wanda has to be the one to kill her own family, twice, and she does it herself so nobody else has to.

What it means for the wider story

The post-credits scene is the important one. Wanda is in a remote cabin, drinking tea in the doorway while her astral form reads the Darkhold in the next room, and she hears the twins calling for help. That single shot rewrites the finale's ending from resolution to relapse, and Multiverse of Madness opens with her already gone.

Whether that film served the character well remains the most argued-about question in the fandom, and it is worth being honest that WandaVision's finale sets up a redemption that the follow-up chose not to write. We are not going to pretend that is a satisfying handoff.

The Vision problem, and why it took five years

The finale left White Vision airborne, memory-restored and completely unresolved. He was, for five years, the single largest dangling thread in the MCU. That changes in three months.

• Paul Bettany returns as Vision, James Spader returns as Ultron and James D'Arcy plays J.A.R.V.I.S.
• Elizabeth Olsen's involvement is unconfirmed. Marvel has not announced her, and reports suggesting otherwise are unverified.
• The title comes from the West Coast Avengers arc in which Vision is disassembled and rebuilt without emotion, which is precisely what Hayward's Project Cataract did to him.

Spader's return is the detail that changes the shape of things. Ultron created Vision's body, and the MCU has not used the character since 2015. Putting him and a memory-restored White Vision in the same series is the closest thing to an Age of Ultron sequel Marvel has attempted.

What's next

Three things are on the board. Vision Quest on 14 October 2026 resolves the White Vision thread. Agatha All Along has already resolved Agatha's, and introduced Billy Maximoff as a young man actively looking for his brother, which is the Young Avengers groundwork Marvel has been laying since 2021. And Wanda herself remains unaccounted for: Elizabeth Olsen is not on Marvel's confirmed cast list for Avengers: Doomsday on 18 December 2026, and the studio has not commented.

One clarification worth making because it circulates constantly: Mephisto was never in WandaVision. The theory dominated the show's weekly run in 2021 and was wrong.
