The story

Three years after Westview, Agatha Harkness is powerless and trapped in a delusion of her own, running a small-town murder investigation she invented. A teenage goth boy she cannot read breaks the spell and asks her to walk the Witches' Road, a trial that grants a witch what she most wants.

The coven she assembles is a collection of failures and frauds, and the Road turns out to be a fabrication of Agatha's own — a con she has run for centuries to harvest other witches' power. It is a series about a woman who cannot stop killing the people who trust her, and about the son she buried.

Characters

Easter eggs

  • 'The Ballad of the Witches' Road' is another Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez earworm, deliberately echoing 'Agatha All Along'.
  • Joe Locke's 'Teen' is revealed as Billy Maximoff, resurrected into another boy's body — Wiccan, a founding Young Avenger.
  • Aubrey Plaza's Rio Vidal is revealed to be Death itself, the MCU's first personification of the concept.
  • Agatha's son Nicholas Scratch is from the 1977 Fantastic Four comics, where he leads the Salem's Seven against her.
  • The Salem Seven appear as Nicholas' children hunting Agatha, drawn straight from the same comics run.
  • Debra Jo Rupp returns as Mrs. Hart from WandaVision, now going by her real name and traumatised by the Hex.
  • Lilia Calderu's tarot readings and her divination are comic-accurate to her 1970s appearances in Marvel's occult titles.
  • The Darkhold's aftermath and the sigils protecting the coven all follow from WandaVision and Multiverse of Madness.

Trivia

  • It is a direct WandaVision spin-off created and showrun by Jac Schaeffer, who made the original series.
  • Kathryn Hahn's Emmy-nominated WandaVision performance is what drove Marvel to greenlight it.
  • Patti LuPone joined as Lilia Calderu, bringing the coven three Tony winners between the cast.
  • The Lopezes wrote a second chart-bothering original song, and the series treats it as an in-universe magical text.
  • It introduced Death as a character to the MCU, a significant piece of cosmology Marvel has not yet revisited.
  • Marvel has not confirmed a second season, though a Wiccan-centred follow-up has been widely reported and never announced.
  • Aubrey Plaza and Kathryn Hahn's scenes were shot with deliberate ambiguity about Rio's identity until late in the season.

Agatha All Along leans into its witchy theatricality with a game cast and Kathryn Hahn's deliciously prickly lead performance, even if its plotting takes a while to cohere.

The MarvelGossips verdict

A stranger, sadder show than the marketing suggested, and easily the best Marvel series since Loki. Hahn is superb and Joe Locke is a genuine find, and the middle stretch takes too long deciding whether the coven matters. Episode seven, which reframes the whole series around a grave, is remarkable.

Frequently asked

Is Wanda in Agatha All Along?
Only in reference and archive material. Elizabeth Olsen does not appear, though the series depends entirely on WandaVision's events and Billy is her resurrected son.
Who is Rio Vidal?
Death, personified — an ancient entity and Agatha's former lover, revealed across the season. It is the MCU's first depiction of Death as a character, a concept the comics tie closely to Thanos.
Will there be a Wiccan series?
Marvel has not announced one. A Billy Maximoff follow-up has been widely reported since the finale, and Joe Locke has said he knows nothing official. Treat it as unconfirmed.
Do I need to watch WandaVision first?
Yes. Agatha's powerlessness, the Westview setting, Mrs. Hart and Billy's entire existence all come from WandaVision, and the series assumes you know all of it.
