Who's Who In The Spider-Verse: Every Major Spider Explained

The Spider-Verse is the idea that every version of Spider-Man across every parallel universe exists simultaneously and can, under the right circumstances, meet. It started as a 2014 comic event, became two of the best animated films ever made, and is now a permanent fixture of how Marvel tells stories. With Spider-Man: Brand New Day arriving on 31 July 2026 and Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man returning for a second season this autumn, here is your map.

The Rules Of The Spider-Verse

Three concepts do most of the work, and once you have them the whole thing makes sense.

• The Web of Life and Destiny — a mystical structure connecting every spider-powered person across every universe. It is the reason they can find each other, and the reason something hunting them can too.
• Canon events — introduced by the films rather than the comics. The idea that certain tragedies must happen in every spider's life for their universe to hold together. It is the philosophical core of Across the Spider-Verse and a deliberately contestable one.
• The anomaly — a spider displaced into the wrong universe. Anomalies destabilise the world they land in, which is the engine of most Spider-Verse plotting.

The Nine You Need To Know

Peter Parker remains the axis, but Miles Morales has been the franchise's creative centre for a decade now, and Gwen Stacy is the character the films most improved on. Miguel O'Hara deserves particular attention: the animated version turned a fairly niche 1992 creation into the multiverse's chief enforcer, and made him wrong in an interesting way rather than a villainous one.

The reason the Spider-Verse works is not the spectacle. It is that every one of these people lost somebody, and the story keeps asking whether that was necessary.

Where To Start: A Five-Step Order

1. Watch Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018). No homework required. Still the best superhero film of the last decade, and a complete story on its own.
2. Watch Across the Spider-Verse (2023). Bigger, angrier, and unresolved — be aware that it ends mid-sentence by design.
3. Read Ultimate Spider-Man #1–28 by Brian Michael Bendis (2011) for Miles' actual origin, which the films compress heavily.
4. Read Spider-Gwen: Most Wanted (2015) by Jason Latour and Robbi Rodriguez for Gwen's world, which is far stranger on the page than on screen.
5. Read the Spider-Verse event (2014) by Dan Slott last, once you already care about the players. It is a crossover, and it reads like one.

What Brand New Day Actually Is

Here is where we stay careful. Spider-Man: Brand New Day releases on 31 July 2026, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, with Tom Holland, Zendaya and Jacob Batalon returning alongside Sadie Sink, Jon Bernthal as the Punisher, Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk, Michael Mando as Mac Gargan and Tramell Tillman. The official synopsis references an unspecified invisible villain. It is tracking for the biggest opening of 2026 at over $180 million.

What is not confirmed: Sadie Sink's role and Tramell Tillman's role are both officially unannounced. Every identification you have seen for either is rumour, including the ones stated with total confidence. Marvel has not commented, and neither the title's comic namesake nor the casting rumours around it should be treated as a plot summary.

The Deep Cuts, If You Want Them

• Spider-Punk — Hobie Brown, anarchist, stole every scene he was in.
• SP//dr — Peni Parker and a psychic mech, from a manga-inflected corner of the multiverse.
• Ben Reilly — the Clone Saga's most divisive legacy, and a genuinely good character trapped in a bad decade of comics.
• Cindy Moon — underused everywhere, and the one most likely to break out next.
• Spider-Man India — Pavitr Prabhakar, whose animated version was the funniest new addition to the film franchise.
