The story

CONFIRMED: Marvel's official synopsis has Peter Parker fighting crime in a New York that has forgotten he exists, struggling as his former friends move on without him, and undergoing an internal change he may not be able to control — a shift that matters when an 'invisible' new villain threatens the city and the people closest to him. Destin Daniel Cretton directs from a Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers script, with Tom Holland, Zendaya and Jacob Batalon returning alongside Jon Bernthal's Punisher, Mark Ruffalo's Bruce Banner and Michael Mando's Mac Gargan.

REPORTED, NOT CONFIRMED: Sadie Sink and Tramell Tillman's roles have never been announced, and every widely circulated identification for Sink — from Jean Grey to a Gwen Stacy or Mary Jane variant — remains unverified scooper speculation. Trade reporting has described the film as a deliberately street-level reset with less Avengers apparatus, and Boxoffice Pro's long-range tracking projects a $180 million-plus domestic opening, which would be 2026's biggest. Treat any specific villain identification beyond Mando's Gargan as rumour until Sony and Marvel confirm it.

Easter eggs

  • The title comes from Marvel's 2008 'Brand New Day' era, which followed One More Day — the storyline where Peter's identity is magically erased from the world, exactly the situation No Way Home left him in.
  • Michael Mando's Mac Gargan pays off a Spider-Man: Homecoming tease from 2017, where he promised to get to Spider-Man from a prison van.
  • Jon Bernthal's Frank Castle continues a run that includes the Netflix Daredevil and Punisher shows and Daredevil: Born Again, folding the street-level MCU together.
  • Mark Ruffalo's return is his first Spider-Man appearance and marks the first time an Avenger other than Tony Stark or Nick Fury has featured in Holland's solo films.
  • Destin Daniel Cretton's hiring reunites Marvel with the Shang-Chi team responsible for the franchise's best hand-to-hand choreography, which fits a street-level Spider-Man.
  • It is the first Holland Spider-Man film without Tony Stark's shadow over the plot, and the first where Peter has no legacy tech to fall back on.

Trivia

  • Destin Daniel Cretton left Marvel's long-delayed Shang-Chi sequel to direct this instead.
  • Marvel and Sony moved the film from a July 2025 window into 31 July 2026 during the post-strike schedule rebuild.
  • Tom Holland suffered a minor head injury during production in autumn 2025, briefly pausing filming.
  • Cretton has said the production leaned on practical stunt work and location shooting in Glasgow and New York rather than volume stages.
  • It is the fourth Holland-led Spider-Man film and the first released after Marvel and Sony extended their co-production arrangement.
  • Boxoffice Pro's long-range forecast projects the biggest opening weekend of 2026 for any film, ahead of Avengers: Doomsday's December date.

Reviews

The MarvelGossips verdict

Unreleased at the time of writing. On paper this is the most promising Spider-Man setup in a decade: a hero with no money, no mentor and no reputation, directed by the one Marvel film-maker who can stage a fight. The risk is the same one every recent Marvel film has run into — a street-level story quietly conscripted into December's Avengers business.

Frequently asked

When does Spider-Man: Brand New Day release?
31 July 2026, confirmed by Marvel and Sony. It is the first MCU theatrical release of 2026, five months ahead of Avengers: Doomsday.
Who is the villain in Brand New Day?
Marvel's official synopsis describes an 'invisible' new villain without naming them. Michael Mando returns as Mac Gargan, who is Scorpion in the comics, but Marvel has not confirmed him as the primary antagonist and every other reported identification is unverified.
Who does Sadie Sink play?
Marvel has not announced her role. Reports have variously linked her to Jean Grey, Gwen Stacy and a Mary Jane variant, and none of it has been confirmed by Sony, Marvel or Sink herself. Treat all of it as rumour.
Does the title reference a comic?
Yes. 'Brand New Day' is the 2008 Amazing Spider-Man relaunch that followed One More Day, in which a deal with Mephisto erased the world's knowledge of Peter's identity — the same situation Doctor Strange's spell created in No Way Home.
