The story

Foggy Nelson is killed in the first episode and Matt Murdock hangs up the suit, going back to practising law in a city where Wilson Fisk has just been elected mayor. Fisk runs New York as a law-and-order project with a vigilante task force, and the two men circle each other over lunch for most of a season.

Season two, which premiered in March 2026, pays off the first season's cliffhanger with Fisk's martial law and brings Krysten Ritter's Jessica Jones back into the fold. It is the closest Marvel Television has come to the tone of the Netflix run, and season three is already greenlit.

Characters

Easter eggs

  • Fisk's election as Mayor of New York adapts Charles Soule's 2016 Daredevil run, where Fisk uses City Hall as a legitimising machine.
  • Foggy Nelson's death and Karen Page's return in the premiere are the series' declaration that the Netflix continuity counts.
  • Muse, the serial killer who paints with blood, is another Soule-run creation and one of Daredevil's most disturbing antagonists.
  • The Hector Ayala trial adapts the White Tiger courtroom storyline, a landmark 1970s Daredevil arc.
  • Yusuf Khan's cab company from Ms. Marvel appears, quietly tying Kamala's family to Hell's Kitchen.
  • Jon Bernthal's Frank Castle confronts a police unit that has co-opted his skull logo, an issue the character's real-world iconography has generated for years.
  • BB Urich, the news anchor, is related to Ben Urich from the Netflix series, whom Fisk murdered.
  • Wilson Bethel returns as Benjamin Poindexter, now in a comic-accurate Bullseye costume.

Trivia

  • The series was rebooted mid-production in 2023; Marvel scrapped much of an original eighteen-episode order and started again.
  • Dario Scardapane, a veteran of Marvel's Netflix Punisher, was brought in as showrunner during the overhaul, with Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead directing.
  • The 2023 writers' and actors' strikes gave Marvel the window to halt and rethink the show entirely.
  • Charlie Cox and Vincent D'Onofrio returned after their Netflix run, following individual cameos in No Way Home and Hawkeye.
  • Season two premiered in March 2026 to the strongest reviews of the revival, with near-perfect critic and audience scores.
  • Season three was greenlit before season two aired, an unusual vote of confidence for a Marvel series.
  • It carries a TV-MA rating, matching the Netflix run's violence level.

Critics

Daredevil: Born Again recaptures the grit and moral weight of its Netflix predecessor, with Charlie Cox and Vincent D'Onofrio's simmering rivalry powering a series that improves as it goes.

The MarvelGossips verdict

A rescue job that worked — you can still see the seams from the 2023 rebuild in season one, and season two is the best live-action Marvel television since the Netflix era. Cox and D'Onofrio's lunch scene is a masterclass. Killing Foggy in the first episode remains a cheap shot the show has never fully justified.

Frequently asked

Has Daredevil: Born Again been renewed?
Yes. Season three was greenlit in September 2025, before season two premiered in March 2026. Marvel has not announced a season three release date.
Is it a continuation of the Netflix show?
Effectively yes. Charlie Cox, Vincent D'Onofrio, Deborah Ann Woll, Elden Henson, Jon Bernthal and Wilson Bethel all return in the same roles, and the series treats the Netflix run's events as canon.
Why was the series rebooted mid-production?
Marvel halted production in 2023 after concluding the original episodic approach was not working, using the strike shutdown to bring in Dario Scardapane and rebuild around a serialised structure closer to the Netflix show.
Does Jessica Jones return?
Yes. Krysten Ritter reprises the role in season two, her first appearance since the Netflix series ended in 2019, resolving the first season's cliffhanger.
