Every Avengers Roster Ranked, From The Founding Five To The Doomsday Army

The Avengers have been reassembled so many times that the roster is arguably the franchise's real main character. Some line-ups are legendary because of who was on them. Most of the great ones are great because of how they were built.

This ranking judges rosters as teams — units with jobs to do — rather than as collections of famous logos.

The Criteria: How A Roster Gets Judged

1. Role coverage. Does the team have a heavy hitter, a strategist, a ranged threat, a magic answer and a scout? Gaps are fatal at this level.
2. Internal friction. Some tension produces drama; too much produces a team that cannot function. Rosters that generated great stories score well, rosters that generated only arguments do not.
3. Threat record. What did they actually stop, and at what cost?
4. Durability. Did the line-up survive long enough to become a definitive era, or did it dissolve in three issues?

Star power is explicitly not a criterion, which is why one of the most beloved line-ups in comics history finishes outside our top three.

The Top Four Rosters

1. The Kooky Quartet (1965)

Stan Lee and Jack Kirby did something no publisher would greenlight today: they removed Thor, Iron Man, Hulk and the Wasp in one issue and handed the team to Captain America, Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch and Hawkeye — three of them reformed villains. It is the single bravest roster decision in Marvel history and it worked, because it forced the book to be about people rather than firepower. Every subsequent redemption arc in Marvel comics descends from it.

2. The Under Siege Roster (1986)

Roger Stern's line-up — Cap, Wasp as chair, Hercules, Monica Rambeau as Captain Marvel and Namor — is the best-balanced team the book ever fielded, and Under Siege is the best Avengers story ever told precisely because that balance is torn apart. The Masters of Evil take the Mansion, break Hercules, and leave Cap watching his home dismantled. A great roster proves itself in defeat, and this one did.

3. The Endgame Assemble (2019)

Every hero in the MCU, portalled in behind Doctor Strange's sling rings, with Steve Rogers holding Mjolnir at the front. It is the largest and most emotionally earned roster in the franchise's history, and it ranks third only because it existed for eleven minutes. Role coverage is total, friction is zero, threat record is perfect. Durability is the one thing it cannot score.

4. The New Avengers (2005)

Bendis rebuilt the team out of a prison break and put Spider-Man, Wolverine and Luke Cage on the same roster as Cap and Iron Man. It was commercially enormous and creatively divisive — a line-up of headliners with overlapping jobs. Massive threat record, poor role discipline, and a decade of Marvel's biggest events to its name.

Strip the nostalgia out and compare the three most consequential line-ups on role coverage. The gaps tell you why each era's stories look the way they do.

Two things jump out. Every one of these celebrated rosters has an empty magic slot, which is why Doctor Strange keeps getting drafted in emergencies. And only the 1986 team had a formally elected chair, which is exactly why it functioned under pressure while Civil War tore its film equivalent apart.

The Doomsday Roster: What We Actually Know

Avengers: Doomsday lands 18 December 2026 with roughly thirty confirmed cast members and a logline about heroes from three distinct universes. That is not a roster, it is a census, and it makes this the hardest team-building problem the Russos have faced.

• Confirmed on the call sheet: Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Simu Liu, Letitia Wright, Lewis Pullman and the rest of the Thunderbolts unit.
• The Fantastic Four cross over — Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Joseph Quinn all confirmed.
• The Fox X-Men contingent is real: Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, Kelsey Grammer, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn and Channing Tatum as Gambit.
• Chris Evans is confirmed to appear; his role is not. Steve Rogers versus Johnny Storm remains genuinely open and Marvel has not commented.
• Robert Downey Jr. plays Doctor Doom, which means the biggest name on the poster is on the other side of the board.
