Biography
Hope van Dyne is the MCU's answer to a sixty-year-old legacy, and she earns it by being better at the job than the man who trains her. The daughter of Hank Pym and Janet van Dyne, she grew up believing her mother died on a classified mission and her father would not tell her why. That grievance is the engine of her character: she wanted the suit in the 2015 film, she was right to want it, and the story's whole arc is Hank admitting it.
The original Wasp is Janet van Dyne, who debuted in Tales to Astonish #44 in June 1963, co-created by Stan Lee, Ernie Hart, and Jack Kirby. Janet is a founding Avenger, the person who named the team, and the first woman to chair it. She has led the Avengers through some of their hardest eras, survived Hank Pym's abuse, spent decades trapped in the Quantum Realm in the film continuity, and remains the character Hope is measuring herself against.
Hope's advantage over every previous Ant-Man is that she trained for it. She has wings and Pym Particle blasters built into the suit from the start, she is a trained martial artist with years of combat instruction, and she runs Pym Technologies as a business. Where Scott Lang improvises, Hope executes. Ant-Man and the Wasp put her name in the title, made her the more competent half of the partnership, and let her spend the film hunting the black-market tech dealers her family created.

Comics history
Hope van Dyne is a film creation, not a comics one. The nearest print analogue is Hope Pym, the Red Queen, who debuted in A-Next #7 (April 1999) in Tom DeFalco and Ron Frenz's MC2 imprint as the villainous daughter of Hank Pym and Janet van Dyne in an alternate future.
The comics Wasp is Janet van Dyne, from Tales to Astonish #44 (June 1963). Janet named the Avengers in their first issue, became the first woman to chair the team under Roger Stern's run, and led them through the Masters of Evil's siege of Avengers Mansion in Under Siege, arguably the best pure Avengers story of the 1980s.
Janet's history includes Hank Pym's mental collapse and the notorious panel in Avengers #213 where he strikes her, a moment Marvel has treated as permanently defining for Pym. She was believed killed during Secret Invasion, returned from the Microverse years later, and continues to headline as a founding Avenger. Nadia van Dyne, Hank's daughter with his first wife, now shares the Wasp identity in the comics as the Unstoppable Wasp.
