Biography
Born Azura, daughter of the Eternal leader Zuras, she took the name Thena after ancient Greeks confused her for their goddess of war and wisdom. It is the perfect Kirby joke: the Eternals did not create the myths deliberately, they simply existed near humans long enough for humans to write them down wrong. Thena is the finest warrior in Olympia and its most formidable scholar, which is exactly what the Athena confusion implies.
Her defining story is her love for Kro, a Deviant warlord and her people's hereditary enemy, and the twin children they secretly had together. It gives her the one thing most Eternals lack: a reason to question the entire Eternal-Deviant war. Angelina Jolie's 2021 performance leaned into a different angle, portraying Thena as a peerless fighter suffering Mahd Wy'ry, whose overflowing memory of every world she has helped destroy makes her the film's most tragic figure.

Comics history
Kirby introduced her in 1976 as Zuras' daughter and Olympia's warrior ideal, and her relationship with the Deviant Kro became the emotional heart of the series' second half, complete with children hidden from both societies. Later writers used her to run the Eternals during periods of upheaval and to interrogate whether the Eternal-Deviant war has any purpose at all.
She appeared in the 1980s Eternals revivals, survived Neil Gaiman's 2006 reboot with her memories stripped, and returned to prominence in Kieron Gillen's 2021 relaunch. The film's Mahd Wy'ry storyline gave the character a mainstream profile she had never previously enjoyed.
