Mister Fantastic
Reed Richards
Villain profile
Owen Reece
A lab technician with an anxiety disorder and absolute control over matter.
Owen Reece was a nervous technician at an atomic research facility who triggered a radiation accident and woke up able to control every molecule in existence. His problem has never been power, it has been personality: Owen is timid, resentful and easily led, which is why a man capable of unmaking the solar system spent his early appearances losing to the Fantastic Four.
Marvel eventually made him structurally important. The Beyonder's interest in Owen powered the original 1984 Secret Wars, and Jonathan Hickman's 2015 Secret Wars revealed that Molecule Men across the multiverse were bombs planted by the Beyonders, with Owen himself serving as the battery that made Doctor Doom a god. The most powerful being in the Marvel Universe is a sad man from Brooklyn who mostly wants to be left alone.
Rated 1–7 on the classic Marvel power-grid scale.
Owen manipulates matter and energy at the molecular level with no meaningful upper limit.
He generates barriers no conventional or cosmic attack has breached.
He conjures objects, structures and entire environments out of nothing.
His body has been reduced to pure energy and reassembled more than once.
In Secret Wars he supplied the raw power that sustained Doom's Battleworld.
Lee and Kirby created him as a one-off Fantastic Four villain in 1963, and later writers slowly revealed how badly they had underrated him. Jim Shooter's 1984 Secret Wars tied him to the Beyonder, and a long stretch of stories treated his therapy and relationship with Volcana as more interesting than his rampages.
Hickman's Secret Wars in 2015 made him the linchpin of the entire multiverse: Molecule Men seeded across realities as detonators, with Owen powering God Emperor Doom's Battleworld. It recast sixty years of appearances as a long build to the most consequential role any Fantastic Four villain has held.
I can unmake anything. I have never been able to make myself feel better.
You keep treating me like a problem. I am the solution somebody else is using.
Debuts in Fantastic Four #20.
Tied to the Beyonder during the original Secret Wars.
Revealed as the power source behind God Emperor Doom in Secret Wars.
Remains Marvel's benchmark for underestimated power.
