Biography
The Mandarin was born to a wealthy family, lost everything, and rebuilt himself by finding the wreck of a Makluan starship and prising ten power rings off its dead pilot. Each ring does something different — ice, flame, electro-blast, mental control, vortex, disintegration — and together they made a disinherited aristocrat into Iron Man's oldest and most ideologically hostile enemy: a man who despises Western technology and intends to replace it with something he controls.
Marvel has spent decades reworking him away from his Yellow Peril origins, with mixed results and one genuinely great swing. Matt Fraction's Invincible Iron Man treated him as a corporate-scale terrorist rather than a warlord in silks, and the MCU split the character in two — Ben Kingsley's Trevor Slattery as a deliberate satire of the stereotype, then Tony Leung's Xu Wenwu in Shang-Chi as the real, fully humanised holder of the Ten Rings.

Comics history
The Mandarin debuted in Tales of Suspense #50 (1964) and became Iron Man's definitive villain, though the original characterisation leaned on period stereotypes Marvel has been actively reworking ever since. Matt Fraction's Invincible Iron Man run recast him as a global terror financier, and the Ten Rings organisation has become the more durable legacy — carried into the MCU as the through-line from Iron Man to Shang-Chi.
