Biography
Jessica Jones survived the car crash that killed her family and woke from a coma with superhuman strength and the ability to fly, badly. She tried the costume. She called herself Jewel, wore something with sequins, and lasted just long enough to walk past a man named Zebediah Killgrave. The Purple Man took her mind for eight months and made her watch herself do things she never chose. When she got free, she did not go back to the cape.
She opened Alias Investigations instead, a one-room private detective agency above a bar, and started taking the jobs superheroes will not touch: cheating spouses, missing kids, blackmail with a costumed angle. Bendis and Gaydos wrote her as noir first and superhero second, and it worked because Jessica is the rare Marvel lead whose defining trait is not her power but the damage she refuses to let define her.
Her life since has been a slow, hard-won argument for staying. She married Luke Cage, had a daughter named Danielle, worked the superhuman beat as a reporter for the Pulse, and joined the New Avengers without ever fully believing she belonged there. Jessica does not do inspirational. She does show up, which in Hell's Kitchen counts for more.

Comics history
Alias #1 launched Marvel's MAX imprint in 2001 and opened with an obscenity no mainstream Marvel comic had printed before. Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Gaydos built a hard-boiled detective book inside the Marvel Universe, retroactively inserting Jessica into Peter Parker's high school class and the wider superhero history as someone who had always been there, just off-panel.
The Purple Man arc across Alias #24 to #28 is the run's spine and remains one of the most harrowing stories Marvel has published, dealing with coercion and consent through a villain whose power is that nobody can refuse him.
The Pulse moved her into the Daily Bugle as a superhuman-beat reporter and folded her into Secret War and House of M. She then anchored New Avengers alongside Luke Cage, married him, and had their daughter Danielle.
Kelly Thompson's 2016 Jessica Jones ongoing put her back behind the desk at Alias Investigations for a run that leaned fully into detective fiction, and Bendis returned for one last Purple Man confrontation before handing the character on.
