Thor
Thor Odinson
Hercules is the son of Zeus, the strongest Olympian, and the most cheerfully irresponsible immortal in the Marvel Universe. He has completed twelve labours, drunk Thor under the table, wrestled a Hulk to a standstill and considered all three roughly equivalent achievements. Where Thor carries the weight of a throne, Hercules carries a wineskin and a genuine belief that a fight is a form of conversation.
The comics have taken him far more seriously than his reputation suggests. Greg Pak and Fred Van Lente's Incredible Hercules paired him with the teenage genius Amadeus Cho and delivered a run that is funny, mythologically literate and unexpectedly devastating, culminating in Chaos War, where Hercules briefly held the power of the All-Father. He remains Marvel's argument that a hero can be a mess and still be genuinely heroic.
Rated 1–7 on the classic Marvel power-grid scale.
Hercules is the physically strongest Olympian, in the same class as Thor and the Hulk.
As a god he does not age and cannot be permanently killed by conventional means.
His divine physiology withstands artillery, cosmic energy and sustained beatings from the heaviest hitters alive.
Three thousand years of warfare make him one of the most experienced hand-to-hand fighters in existence.
His golden mace, forged in Olympus, can shatter almost any material.
He heals from catastrophic injury far faster than any mortal.
He fights, drinks and travels indefinitely without meaningful fatigue.
Stan Lee and Jack Kirby introduced Hercules in Journey into Mystery Annual #1 in 1965 as a rival for Thor, and the two have been trading blows and drinks ever since. He joined the Avengers in the 1960s, then co-founded the original Champions in 1975 alongside Ghost Rider, Iceman, Angel and Black Widow, one of the strangest team line-ups Marvel ever assembled.
Bob Layton's Hercules: Prince of Power limited series in the 1980s established the comedic-cosmic register the character does best, sending him into space with a spaceship and no plan.
Greg Pak and Fred Van Lente's Incredible Hercules from 2008 is his defining run. Taking over the Incredible Hulk's numbering, it paired him with Amadeus Cho, wove in genuine Greek mythology, and led into Chaos War, where Hercules ascended to All-Father-level power to fight the Chaos King. He has since served with the God Squad and returned repeatedly to Avengers duty.
