Biography
Sam Wilson was the first African-American superhero in mainstream American comics, debuting in Captain America #117 in September 1969, three years after T'Challa broke the colour barrier as the first Black superhero. He arrived as a social worker from Harlem trained on an island prison by the Red Skull's manipulations, and he has spent five decades being the moral centre of a book that is nominally about somebody else.
His powers are modest and his usefulness is not. The wing harness, designed for him by Black Panther in the mid-1970s to replace his original glider rig, gives him full aerial combat capability, and the psychic link with his falcon Redwing, an unintended gift of the Cosmic Cube, extends into limited communion with all birds. What makes Sam formidable is that he is a genuinely excellent close-quarters fighter, a trained counsellor who reads people faster than anyone on the roster, and the only Avenger who consistently asks whether the plan is right rather than whether it will work.
He became Captain America in All-New Captain America #1 in January 2015, after the Iron Nail purged the Super-Soldier Serum from Steve Rogers's body and left him elderly. Sam's run with the shield was deliberately political, tackling immigration enforcement, protest policing, and a public that told him to stay out of politics while calling him Captain America. Endgame handed him the same mantle on screen, and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier spent six episodes on the question of whether a Black man can carry that flag at all.

Comics history
Sam debuted in Captain America #117 with a glider harness and a trained falcon, and Steve Rogers took him on as a partner almost immediately, with the book retitled Captain America and the Falcon for a long stretch. Black Panther replaced the glider with a genuine flight harness in the mid-1970s, and Sam's Cosmic Cube-derived avian link was revealed as a Red Skull manipulation of his origin.
Christopher Priest's Falcon miniseries and later runs deepened his Harlem roots, and Ed Brubaker's Captain America made him the co-lead of the book's most acclaimed modern era, working alongside Bucky Barnes and Sharon Carter through the Winter Soldier and Death of Captain America arcs.
Rick Remender's All-New Captain America (2015) gave Sam the shield after the Iron Nail drained Steve's serum, and Nick Spencer's Captain America: Sam Wilson ran the mantle through overt political territory, including Americops, immigration raids, and the Hydra-Cap conspiracy of Secret Empire. Sam returned to the Falcon identity in 2017 and then reclaimed the shield in the 2020s through The United States of Captain America and Captain America: Symbol of Truth.
