The story

Jennifer Walters is a deputy district attorney who gets Bruce Banner's blood in an open wound during a car crash and inherits a Hulk without any of the trauma that usually comes with it. She is then fired, rehired to run a superhuman law division, and asked to be a spokesmodel.

The series is a half-hour legal sitcom, a genre Marvel had not attempted, and it spends nine episodes on cases involving Blonsky's parole, a shapeshifting Asgardian light-elf and a men's-rights forum. The finale breaks the fourth wall entirely and has Jen storm the Marvel Studios lot to argue with the studio's AI.

Easter eggs

  • Charlie Cox's Daredevil appears in a yellow-and-red suit drawn from his 1964 debut costume, his first comedic outing in the role.
  • The finale breaks the fourth wall to confront 'K.E.V.I.N.', an AI running Marvel Studios, a gag Kevin Feige personally approved.
  • Titania, the influencer supervillain, is a genuine She-Hulk antagonist from the 1984 Secret Wars.
  • Emil Blonsky's Summer Twilight retreat and his seven soulmates give the Abomination a redemption arc no one asked for and many enjoyed.
  • Skaar, the Hulk's son from Greg Pak's Planet Hulk-era comics, is introduced in the finale's final seconds.
  • Megan Thee Stallion cameos as herself and twerks with She-Hulk, a scene that dominated the show's discourse for weeks.
  • The Intelligencia is a comics organisation reworked here as a men's-rights message board, and Todd Phelps becomes the Hulk-King.
  • Wong's recurring appearances turn the Sorcerer Supreme into a sitcom neighbour, including a subplot about Madisynn and The Sopranos.

Trivia

  • Jessica Gao, an Emmy-winning Rick and Morty writer, created the series and its fourth-wall-breaking structure.
  • It adapts John Byrne's 1989 Sensational She-Hulk run, which had Jen address the reader and tear through panel borders.
  • The CGI drew sustained criticism, and VFX artists spoke anonymously to the press about compressed Marvel schedules during its production.
  • Tatiana Maslany's She-Hulk is a full-body performance-capture role, with her facial performance mapped onto the model.
  • It remains the MCU's only half-hour sitcom.
  • Charlie Cox has said the yellow suit was his own preference, having wanted a comic-accurate costume since the Netflix series.
  • The finale's K.E.V.I.N. gag required a real approval process, and Feige has said he found it funny enough to allow.

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law's fourth-wall-breaking sitcom format won't be for everyone, but Tatiana Maslany's charm and its willingness to poke fun at the MCU make it a genuinely fresh entry.

The MarvelGossips verdict

A funnier show than its reputation and a worse one than its ambitions, undone by rushed effects work that its lead deserved better than. Maslany is excellent and the Daredevil episode is the best thing in it. The finale's meta-textual demolition is either the boldest thing Marvel has aired or a two-hour shrug, depending entirely on your patience.

Frequently asked

Will there be a She-Hulk season 2?
Marvel has not announced one. Tatiana Maslany has said publicly she has heard nothing, and the series' finale gag about corporate interference has been read as a pre-emptive goodbye.
Why was the CGI criticised so heavily?
The She-Hulk model drew immediate mockery on release, and effects artists subsequently told outlets including Vulture that Marvel's compressed post-production schedules and late-breaking changes made the work near-impossible to finish.
Is this Daredevil's yellow costume from the comics?
Yes. It is based on his 1964 Daredevil #1 look, worn before he switched to red. Charlie Cox wears a red-and-yellow variant, and it was his own request.
Who is Skaar?
The Hulk's son, introduced in the finale's closing seconds. He comes from Greg Pak's Planet Hulk and Skaar: Son of Hulk comics, and has not appeared in the MCU since.
