Gwen Stacy is a fugitive in her own universe because her father is investigating her for a murder she did not commit, and she has been recruited into a Spider-Society that polices the multiverse. Miles is grounded, lying to his parents about his grades and about everything else.
The Spot, a scientist turned into a walking hole by the first film's collider, becomes a genuine multiversal threat, and Miguel O'Hara's Society will not stop him because Miles' father is scheduled to die and canon requires it. The film's climax is a boy told by six hundred versions of himself that his family has to die, and refusing.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse spins another stunning web of superhero action, and this sequel's dazzling animation is matched by a thoughtfully layered story.
The MarvelGossips verdict
Visually the most ambitious animated film ever attempted, and structurally half of a movie, which is the one thing holding it back from surpassing the original. Gwen's opening act is the most beautiful sequence in either film. Ending on a cliffhanger was a gamble that has looked worse with every year Beyond the Spider-Verse fails to arrive.
