The story

Tony has gone public, privatised world peace and started dying: the palladium core keeping him alive is poisoning his blood. He responds by drinking, racing a Formula car himself and handing his company to Pepper, while a Senate committee and rival contractor Justin Hammer circle the armour.

Ivan Vanko, son of the Soviet physicist Howard Stark discredited and deported, arrives with an arc reactor of his own and a grudge that is older than Tony. The film's real work is quieter — Nick Fury handing Tony his father's Stark Expo film and telling him the answer has been in the model all along.

Characters

Easter eggs

  • Coulson uses Captain America's prototype shield to level a particle accelerator, then asks Tony what it is doing there.
  • Fury's S.H.I.E.L.D. briefing screen shows a world map of flagged hotspots, including a marker in Africa long read by fans as Wakanda and an Atlantic marker in the North Sea.
  • The post-credits scene ends on Mjolnir in a New Mexico crater, directly setting up Thor two months later.
  • Stan Lee cameos as Larry King, complete with braces and a mug, greeting Tony at the Expo.
  • Elon Musk appears as himself at the Monaco Grand Prix, pitching an electric jet to Tony.
  • Howard Stark's 1974 Expo model city conceals the diagram for the new element, the 'key to the future' Tony assembles into vibranium-free clean power.
  • Fury's Avengers Initiative file includes Natasha's psych assessment, which flags Tony as 'textbook narcissism' and recommends against recruitment.
  • Roxxon Oil signage is scattered across the Expo grounds, the MCU's long-running corporate villain.

Trivia

  • Justin Theroux, better known as an actor, wrote the screenplay from a story he developed with Downey.
  • Mickey Rourke visited Butyrka prison in Moscow to research Vanko, and insisted on the gold teeth, cockatoo and prison tattoos, including one honouring a real inmate.
  • Sam Rockwell had auditioned for Tony Stark on the first film before being cast as Hammer.
  • Scarlett Johansson dyed her hair red before her deal closed and trained for months for the corridor fight, which was shot largely without a double.
  • Favreau later said a locked release date forced the script into production before it was ready, and cited it as a reason he stepped away from the franchise.
  • The Monaco sequence was shot on the actual Circuit de Monaco during the off-season, with Downey driving a modified Rossion.

It isn't quite the breath of fresh air that Iron Man was, but this sequel comes close with solid performances and an action-packed plot.

The MarvelGossips verdict

The film where the MCU's homework started showing — a decent Tony Stark character study repeatedly interrupted by S.H.I.E.L.D. filing cabinets. Rourke and Rockwell are both giving interesting performances in films that don't quite exist, and the Vanko drone finale is the franchise's first genuinely disposable climax. Worth it for Black Widow's arrival and the Expo model reveal.

Frequently asked

Does Iron Man 2 set up Thor?
Yes. The post-credits scene shows Coulson arriving at a crater in New Mexico containing Mjolnir, which is the opening situation of Thor. The two films run concurrently in the MCU timeline.
What is the new element Tony creates?
The film never names it on screen, though tie-in material and later dialogue treat it as a vibranium-adjacent synthetic isotope. Its function is to replace the palladium core that was poisoning him and power the Mark VI onward.
Is Black Widow's debut here?
Yes. Iron Man 2 is Scarlett Johansson's first appearance as Natasha Romanoff, posing as Stark Industries legal aide Natalie Rushman while assessing Tony for the Avengers Initiative.
Who is Ivan Vanko in the comics?
He is a composite of two characters: Anton Vanko, the original Crimson Dynamo, and Whiplash. The film makes him Anton's son, reframing the arc reactor as a stolen shared invention.
