Biography

Eddie Brock was a Daily Globe journalist who built a career on a serial-killer confession, then watched Spider-Man catch the real culprit and turn his byline into a punchline. Disgraced, divorced and dying of cancer, he went to a church to pray for the strength to kill himself — and found an alien that had just been rejected by Peter Parker, grieving in the rafters. Two rejections found each other. That is the whole engine of Venom.

The symbiote came from Battleworld as a costume Peter picked up in Secret Wars, and it carried Spider-Man's memories, his reflexes and his weaknesses when it moved to Eddie. That is why Venom was such a nightmare in 1988: he was stronger than Peter, invisible to his spider-sense, and knew where Aunt May lived. Todd McFarlane's design — the grin, the tongue, the sheer mass — made him an instant phenomenon and Marvel's best-selling character of the decade.

Then Lethal Protector happened. Marvel discovered readers liked Eddie better when he was defending homeless communities in San Francisco than when he was stalking Peter, and Venom became the definitive anti-hero: a bad man with a monstrous roommate, trying to be useful. Donny Cates pushed it further, revealing the symbiotes' god Knull, and by King in Black Eddie Brock — a hack reporter with a grudge — had killed a primordial deity and taken his throne.

Comics history

The black costume arrived in Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars #8 (1984) from a fan design by Randy Schueller that Marvel bought for $220. It was revealed as a living alien in Amazing Spider-Man #258, rejected in Web of Spider-Man #1, and finally bonded to Eddie Brock in Amazing Spider-Man #300 (1988), with Todd McFarlane locking in the iconic look.

Venom: Lethal Protector (1993) moved Eddie to San Francisco, introduced the Life Foundation symbiotes and turned him into a franchise anti-hero. The 2000s scattered the symbiote through Mac Gargan and Flash Thompson's Agent Venom, while Eddie became Anti-Venom and later Toxin.

Donny Cates and Ryan Stegman's Venom (2018) rewired the mythology: the symbiotes were revealed as the creations of Knull, a primordial god of the abyss, and their hive-network the Klyntar as a religion built to contain him. Absolute Carnage (2019) and King in Black (2020-2021) paid it off with Eddie killing Knull and ascending to the throne of the symbiote hive.

Is Venom a hero or a villain?
Both, in that order. Eddie Brock debuted as a straight villain obsessed with destroying Spider-Man, then Lethal Protector (1993) recast him as a violent defender of people nobody else protects. Modern Venom is a genuine anti-hero — he will save your life and eat the man who threatened it.
Why can't Spider-Man's spider-sense detect Venom?
The symbiote spent time bonded to Peter Parker, so his spider-sense reads it as part of himself rather than as a threat. It is the single tactical advantage that made Venom feel unbeatable in his first appearances.
What are Venom's weaknesses?
Sound and fire. Sonic frequencies disrupt the symbiote's molecular cohesion, and intense heat forces it off its host. Both were established early precisely because Venom otherwise outclassed Spider-Man physically.
Who is Knull and why does he matter to Venom?
