Biography

Cletus Kasady was a serial killer before he ever met an alien. He murdered his grandmother, burned down his orphanage, and by his own count killed eleven people, all without a single superpower. Marvel is very deliberate about this: Carnage is not a man corrupted by a symbiote, he is a man a symbiote could not make worse. When the Venom symbiote spawned in Eddie Brock's cell and bonded to his cellmate, it simply gave an existing monster reach.

The bond is deeper than Venom's, which is why he is stronger. The symbiote fused with Cletus at the blood level rather than sitting on his skin, making it impossible to separate them by sound or fire the way Venom can be peeled off. It also means Carnage does not negotiate with his other half. There is no internal argument, no Lethal Protector turn, no better angel. There is one appetite with two mouths.

What makes him work as a villain is the absence of a plan. Everyone else in Spider-Man's rogues gallery wants something — money, respect, a city, a rematch. Cletus wants the world to see that nothing means anything, and he is happy to spend a hundred lives proving it. Maximum Carnage put him at the head of a cheerful murder cult in 1993; Absolute Carnage turned him into a religious fanatic hunting every symbiote host alive. Neither version wanted a throne. That is precisely why he is hard to stop.

Comics history

David Michelinie and Mark Bagley introduced Cletus Kasady in Amazing Spider-Man #344 (1991) and unleashed Carnage in #361 (1992). He was designed explicitly as the villain Venom could not handle alone, forcing the first Spider-Man/Venom team-up.

Maximum Carnage (1993) sprawled across fourteen issues and five titles, sent Carnage on a killing spree through New York with Shriek, Demogoblin and Carrion, and required Spider-Man, Venom, Captain America, Iron Fist, Cloak, Dagger and more to contain him. It sold enormously and got its own video game.

Donny Cates and Ryan Stegman's Absolute Carnage (2019) rebuilt him as a zealot of Knull, hunting every human who had ever hosted a symbiote to harvest their codex. Carnage has since died, returned, bonded to Norman Osborn's arc as the Red Goblin, and headlined his own ongoing series.
