Biography
Michael Morbius was a Nobel-winning biochemist dying of a rare blood disease when he tried to save himself with an experimental treatment involving vampire bat enzymes and electroshock. It worked, technically. His disease is gone. So is his ability to survive without drinking human blood, along with his reflection, his tolerance for sunlight, and any prospect of a normal life.
That makes him one of Marvel's most specific tragedies: a scientist who understands exactly what he has become, can describe the biochemistry of his own hunger in clinical detail, and still cannot stop. Morbius exists because the Comics Code Authority loosened its ban on vampires in 1971, and he has spent five decades oscillating between Spider-Man villain, Midnight Sons ally and the reluctant conscience of Marvel's monster corner.

Comics history
Roy Thomas and Gil Kane created Morbius in The Amazing Spider-Man #101, made possible by the Comics Code Authority's 1971 revision allowing vampires back into mainstream comics. He was an immediate hit and moved quickly into Adventure into Fear as a headliner.
The 1992 Morbius: The Living Vampire ongoing made him a pillar of the Midnight Sons alongside Ghost Rider, Blade and the rest of Marvel's supernatural line, and the run leaned into body horror in a way Marvel rarely attempted.
Later stories have kept him ambiguous: a member of the Legion of Monsters, an occasional Spider-Man antagonist, and a scientist repeatedly recruited by S.H.I.E.L.D. and worse for work on blood-borne biology. The 2022 film adaptation is best remembered as a meme, which the character has survived comfortably.
