Who Survives Avengers: Secret Wars? A Cold-Eyed Theory, Character by Character

RDJ is the only confirmed cast member. So we built a survival theory from what Marvel actually needs after 2027 — and rated every major name on the board.

Who Survives Avengers: Secret Wars? A Cold-Eyed Theory, Character by Character

Robert Downey Jr. is the only cast member Marvel has publicly attached to Avengers: Secret Wars. The film is dated 17 December 2027. The Russos direct, Michael Waldron writes, Kevin Feige calls it the end of the Multiverse Saga and a reset point. That is the complete confirmed record, and it is worth repeating because everything below it is theory.

Speculation notice: no casualty, survival or casting claim in this article is confirmed. We are reasoning from franchise structure — what Marvel has dated after 2027 and therefore what it needs to still have. Scooper claims about who dies in this film should be treated as unverified.

The Only Reliable Method: Follow the Schedule

Death rumours are worthless. Release dates are not. Marvel has dated or reported the following after Secret Wars, and each one is a constraint on who can be killed.

ProjectDateStatusWhat it protects
The X-Men15 Dec 2028Confirmed — Schreier directing, Lesslie writingA mutant franchise, cast unknown
Fantastic Four 25 May 2028Reported slot onlyThe First Steps family
Black Panther 328 Jul 2028Reported slot onlyWakanda's cast
Doctor Strange 34 May 2029Reported slot onlyStephen Strange
Deadpool 413 Jul 2029Reported slot onlyWade Wilson

Only the 2028 X-Men film is confirmed. The rest are reported slots and Marvel has not commented on them. Even so, the shape is legible: the studio's next decade is built on mutants, a Fantastic Four family, Wakanda and two established solo brands. Those are the characters it cannot afford to bury.

Tier One: Effectively Untouchable

These are the names whose deaths would cost Marvel a dated or heavily reported project. On survival odds alone, they are the safest people in the building.

  • The Fantastic Four — Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Joseph Quinn are all confirmed for Doomsday, and First Steps was Marvel's biggest 2025 film at $519.1 million worldwide.
  • Doctor Strange — the multiverse's designated explainer, and the only lead who can plausibly narrate a reset.
  • Peter Parker — Brand New Day opens 31 July 2026 tracking for the biggest opening of the year. You do not relaunch a character in order to retire him eighteen months later.
  • Shuri and the Wakanda contingent — Letitia Wright and Tenoch Huerta are both confirmed for Doomsday.

Tier Two: Narratively Expensive, Therefore Likely

Marvel's ending problem is arithmetic. Roughly thirty confirmed names are on the Doomsday cast list. A reset film needs weight, and weight in this franchise has always been purchased with legacy characters who have somewhere thematically satisfying to stop.

Thor is the strongest candidate on structure alone. He is the last founding Avenger still active, Chris Hemsworth is confirmed for Doomsday, and Love and Thunder already ended with him raising a child. Wanda Maximoff is the other, and the more interesting one: Multiverse of Madness ended with her apparently killing herself to destroy the Darkhold across every reality, and Agatha All Along has since demonstrated that the MCU is comfortable resurrecting characters from that corner. A return-and-sacrifice arc is the most efficient use of a character the audience is still arguing about.

Marvel does not kill the characters it can still sell. It kills the ones whose stories have already ended, and then charges you for the funeral.

Tier Three: The Legacy Cast Nobody Can Predict

The Fox contingent — Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, Kelsey Grammer, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, Channing Tatum — are all confirmed for Doomsday and none are plausible ongoing leads for a franchise that has publicly committed to unknown young actors for its 2028 X-Men film. Our full analysis of that casting argues it reads as a send-off rather than an onboarding, which makes this group the most exposed on the board.

The Chris Evans Problem

Evans is confirmed for Doomsday. His role is not. Marvel has never specified whether he is playing Steve Rogers or the Human Torch of an older universe, and both circulating options are unverified. His survival odds depend entirely on which — Steve Rogers already has a completed ending in Endgame and a successor in Sam Wilson, while a Johnny Storm variant has no ending at all and one very memorable on-screen death already behind him in Deadpool & Wolverine. We have a full breakdown in our Evans role analysis.

The Case Against All of This

One honest caveat. Every prediction above assumes Secret Wars kills people at all. Hickman's 2015 comic — the version reporting has consistently linked to the film, without Marvel confirming it — has a remarkably low body count among its leads. It ends with a rebuild, not a massacre. If Marvel follows that shape, the correct answer to this article's headline is simply: almost everyone, in a universe that no longer quite works the way it did. Our reset analysis makes the case for why that is the likeliest outcome.

Frequently asked

Who is confirmed for Avengers: Secret Wars?
Robert Downey Jr. is the only cast member Marvel has publicly attached. Everyone else discussed in relation to the film is speculation, including actors confirmed for Avengers: Doomsday.
Is Chris Evans confirmed to be playing Captain America in Doomsday?
No. Evans is confirmed in the cast, but Marvel has never specified the role. The two widely circulated options, Steve Rogers and a Human Torch from an older universe, are both unverified.
Will Doctor Doom die in Secret Wars?
Unknown and unannounced. In the 2015 comic, Doom is defeated but not killed — he concedes to Reed Richards and is restored rather than destroyed. Marvel has confirmed no plot detail for the film.
When does Avengers: Secret Wars release?
17 December 2027, moved from an earlier 7 May 2027 date. The Russo brothers direct from a Michael Waldron screenplay.
