The Blip Explained: What Actually Happened in the MCU's Missing Five Years

The Blip is the most consequential event in MCU history and one of the least precisely understood. Half of all living things in the universe were erased in 2018 and restored in 2023, and the five years in between are where most of Phase 4's emotional material actually comes from — even though almost none of it happens on screen.

The Two Events, and Why They Have Different Names

Precision matters here because the terms get used interchangeably and they should not.

In-universe, ordinary people use the Blip for the whole five-year mess — the disappearance and the return together — which is why Far From Home has a school newsreel treating it as a single historical episode. Fans use it for the return specifically. Both are defensible; just be consistent.

The Restoration Rule That Makes Everything Work

Bruce Banner states the terms explicitly before he snaps: bring everyone back, but bring them back to now, at the age they were, without undoing the five years the survivors lived. That single line is the load-bearing beam of every post-2023 story.

• The returned did not age. Peter Parker's classmates come back as high-schoolers to a world five years older.
• The survivors did age. Everyone who was not dusted lived through the gap in real time.
• The dead stayed dead. Anyone killed by ordinary means during the gap — or before the Snap — was not restored.
• Property, relationships and legal identity were not restored. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier builds a whole series out of that administrative nightmare.
• The returned came back where they had been, which caused catastrophic accidents worldwide — a detail Far From Home and Ms. Marvel both gesture at.

The MCU's most radical creative decision was refusing to make the reversal painless. Everyone came back, and nothing went back to normal.

Who Was Where During the Five Years

What the Gap Did to the World

Marvel has been unusually consistent about the politics of this. The world that returns in 2023 is not the world that vanished in 2018, and three separate projects have picked at the consequences.

1. The Global Repatriation Council is created to reintegrate the returned. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier makes it the engine of its entire conflict, and the Flag Smashers exist because the five-year world was, for some people, better.
2. Property and housing collapse into chaos. Families had moved on, moved in, remarried and inherited. Sam Wilson cannot get a bank loan on his own family's boat.
3. Half the world's infrastructure was rebuilt for half the population, then had to absorb the other half overnight.
4. Superhero governance changes permanently. The Sokovia Accords lapse into irrelevance, and by 2027 Thunderbolts* shows a landscape where private and state-sponsored teams have filled the vacuum.

The Timeline Errors Worth Knowing About

Two of them are famous and one is genuinely unresolved.

• Spider-Man: Homecoming opens with an '8 years later' card that would push it to 2020. Marvel has acknowledged this as an error; the film belongs in 2016.
• Far From Home implies Peter's class returned at exactly the right point in the school year, which requires some generosity about how the restoration worked.
• The exact month of the Snap has never been stated on screen. The commonly cited placement of late 2018 comes from supplementary material rather than dialogue.

Why the Blip Still Matters in 2026

Because the MCU never repaired it. There is a generation in this fiction that grew up half-erased, a world that rebuilt twice in five years, and a global institution built entirely around processing the returned. When Doomsday opens on 18 December 2026 with heroes from three distinct universes colliding, the audience it is aimed at inside the story has already survived one universe-scale catastrophe.
