The story

Eight months after the Blip, Peter wants a European school trip and a chance to tell MJ how he feels, and instead gets Nick Fury in his hotel room and a pair of Tony Stark's glasses that control a satellite weapons array. A man in a fishbowl helmet claims to be from another Earth and to be fighting elemental creatures.

Quentin Beck is a fired Stark Industries holographic engineer with a grudge and a team of similarly discarded specialists, and Mysterio is the best-executed villain reveal in the MCU's Spider-Man run. The film's real payload is the mid-credits scene, which hands Peter's name to the world.

Characters

Easter eggs

  • The opening 'in memoriam' school broadcast and the Blip explainer set the post-Endgame world's rules with a school AV project.
  • J.K. Simmons returns as J. Jonah Jameson in the mid-credits scene, eighteen years after Sam Raimi's Spider-Man, now running a TheDailyBugle.net conspiracy channel.
  • The post-credits scene reveals Talos and Soren have been impersonating Fury and Hill all film, tying to Captain Marvel and Secret Invasion.
  • Beck's crew includes William Riva, who designed Tony's B.A.R.F. hologram from Civil War, and Guterman, who was fired for calling Stark's projects unstable.
  • The word 'multiverse' is spoken in the MCU for the first time here, and it is a lie inside a con.
  • The Elementals are named Hydro-Man, Molten Man, Sandman and Cyclone in the film's fiction, all recognisable Spider-Man rogues.
  • Peter's stealth suit is nicknamed the Night Monkey and is a riff on the comics' Spider-Man Noir palette.
  • E.D.I.T.H. — 'Even Dead I'm The Hero' — is Tony's posthumous acronym joke and the film's central object.

Trivia

  • Jake Gyllenhaal joined weeks before shooting; Sony had courted him to play Spider-Man in the mid-2000s before Tobey Maguire's contract was resolved.
  • The Berlin illusion sequence was designed with practical mirror rigs and deliberately Raimi-esque horror imagery, including a corpse hand and a giant Spider-Man head.
  • J.K. Simmons' return was kept out of all marketing and even from most of the cast until the premiere.
  • It became Sony Pictures' highest-grossing film ever at the time of release.
  • Filming took place in Venice, Prague, Liberec and London, with Prague and Liberec doubling for other European cities.
  • The film ended Phase 3 rather than Endgame, a decision Kevin Feige made to give the Infinity Saga a quieter coda.
  • Tom Holland has said the mid-credits identity reveal was shot with three different endings to protect the leak.

A breezy, action-packed adventure, Spider-Man: Far From Home offers a lighter epilogue to the MCU's most recent epic while setting the stage for what comes next.

The MarvelGossips verdict

The strongest villain of the Holland trilogy in the weakest film of it — a European holiday comedy that keeps stopping to remind Peter about a dead man. Gyllenhaal's Beck is a great satirical creation, a mediocre man who understands narrative better than anyone with actual powers. The teen material with Zendaya and Batalon is where it genuinely sings.

Frequently asked

Is Mysterio really from another universe?
No. Quentin Beck is a fired Stark Industries engineer running an elaborate hologram con with a crew of other Stark castoffs. The multiverse claim is a fabrication, which is why No Way Home's real multiverse arrives as such a shock.
What happens in the mid-credits scene?
A doctored Mysterio video accuses Spider-Man of the drone attack and reveals Peter Parker's identity worldwide, broadcast by J.K. Simmons' J. Jonah Jameson. It is the inciting incident of Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Is this the end of Phase 3?
Yes. Marvel positioned Far From Home rather than Endgame as the Infinity Saga's closing chapter, giving the saga an epilogue rather than a finale.
How long after Endgame is it set?
Eight months. The world is adjusting to the return of half its population, and the film calls the five-year gap the Blip, the term the MCU has used ever since.
