Biography
Dormammu is a Faltine, a being of pure mystical energy who murdered his own father, was exiled by his kind, and conquered the Dark Dimension by absorbing it into himself. He is less a person than a weather system with ambitions: an entity whose flaming head is the visible portion of a power source large enough to swallow realities. What he wants is simple and endless — more dimensions, ours included.
He is Doctor Strange's true opposite number because he cannot be beaten by force. Every physical confrontation Strange loses. What works is the thing Dormammu is genuinely bad at: negotiation, humility, and the willingness to lose. Steve Ditko established this in the 1960s with Strange winning through mystical loopholes and honour-bound bargains, and Scott Derrickson's film paid direct homage — Strange defeats a god of raw power by boring him into a treaty.

Comics history
Ditko and Lee built Dormammu in Strange Tales as the pinnacle of Doctor Strange's rogues gallery, and Ditko's psychedelic renderings of the Dark Dimension became one of Marvel's most influential visual inventions.
Later runs, particularly Roger Stern's and Jason Aaron's, kept him as the fixed apex threat of Marvel magic — a being whose incursions require the Sorcerer Supreme, the Vishanti and occasionally the Avengers. He has also served as the source of power for villains from Baron Mordo to Clea's enemies, making him Marvel's most reliable magical enabler.
